Neillsville Martial Arts Students Earn Black Belt
Last November 7 was a special day for the American Kyukido Federation. It was the day when it held its Black Belt Extravaganza in Wisconsin. A hundred martial arts students from schools all over the United States took part in the event in order to earn their black belts. Among them are six students from AKF Neillsville. They travelled with their instructor to get their promotion.
Chris Riese, who has been training for seven years, and Amy Parker, who has been training for ten years, earned their second degree black belts at the event. Sarah Fields, Josie Voigt, Teeghan Mahoney, and Robyn Enloe got their first degree black belts.
Gordon Martial Arts in Crestview, Florida Holds Annual Test and Awards
Around 250 attendees were at the Warriors Hall last December 12 to witness and participate in the promotional ceremony of Gordon Martial Arts. The youngest among the 80 students was just 4 years old, with others well into their 60s. They tested for new ranks in hapkido or taekwondo. The actual tests were held the previous Monday and Tuesday.
Taekwondo students were the first ones to take the floor for their tests. They were grouped into six to eight students with similar expertise and level of training. Students had to go through a series of prearranged movements. They were paired with a partner of similar size to show self-defense movements against grabs and common strikes.
Firefighters Get Free Self Defense Training
A martial arts studio in Edwardsville, Illinois is providing free training for firefighters. The goal of the training is to help them avoid injuries when they response to emergency situations. James Whiteford, captain of the Edwardsville Fire Department, said that the goal is to be able to get out of the situation when there’s an aggressive person at the location of the emergency.
Rich Grogan’s Academy of Martial Arts is teaching self-defense classes to on-duty and off-duty firefighters who have opted to join the class. Captain Whiteford said that he also invited firefighters from nearby departments to participate in the training sessions.
UFC Gym at Mesa, Arizona Gets a New Martial Arts Facility
Fitness buffs can try a new activity at the UFC Gym Mesa, which is located at the corner of East Broadway and South Ellsworth roads. Fans of mixed martial arts can recognize the brand right away and they know what to expect when they step into the gym.
Tisha Byers, assistant manager of the UFC Gym Mesa, said that they train differently. UFC has partnered with New Evolution Ventures as it tries to expand its brand to make MMA training accessible to the public. The gym used to be known as LA Boxing, until it was rebranded as UFC Gym Mesa.
North Wales, PA Martial Arts Studio Owner Receives Award from South Korean President
Yang’s Martial Arts School in North Wales, PA is one of the most prominent local businesses in the area. Its owner, Master Bong Pil Yang, recently got a Special Award from the South Korean president. The special commendation from his native country came after he received a similar honor from the district attorney’s office of Montgomery County.
Master Yang said that when you get recognitions, you should work harder, and at the same time stay dedicated and humble. He has lived in the greater Philadelphia area since 1978. He opened the school on South Main Street in the 1990s, from its previous location on Broad Street in Lansdale.
Capoeira Gets UNESCO Cultural Heritage Status
Capoeira is a martial art that originated from Brazil. Slaves of African descent were the ones who have created the martial art. The UNESCO has added Capoeira to its list of cultural manifestations known as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity last November 26.
The new status of the Brazilian martial art was announced during UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage that took place in Paris. The martial art is played in more than a hundred countries across the globe. It is a vital exponent of Brazilian culture and they share it to people all over the world.
Ninja Grandmaster Trains Littleton Martial Arts Studio Instructor
A ninja dojo in Littleton, Colorado teaches the authentic way of the ninjas. Kaizen Martial Arts can now claim direct lineage to one of the two living ninja grandmasters. Sensei Bensen of the martial arts studio has trained with Shoto Tanemura, who traces his ninja teachers back to Uryu Hangan Gikanbo, a sensei from 1558 Japan.
Ninjitsu is an ancient Japanese martial art that trains individuals in physical fitness, mental awareness, weaponry, and stealth. Ninja warriors in the 1500s are like the special operations unit of that time. At present, the special ops of the armed forces use the same ideas.
