Fitness buffs can try a new activity at the UFC Gym Mesa, which is located at the corner of East Broadway and South Ellsworth roads. Fans of mixed martial arts can recognize the brand right away and they know what to expect when they step into the gym.

Tisha Byers, assistant manager of the UFC Gym Mesa, said that they train differently. UFC has partnered with New Evolution Ventures as it tries to expand its brand to make MMA training accessible to the public. The gym used to be known as LA Boxing, until it was rebranded as UFC Gym Mesa.

Yang’s Martial Arts School in North Wales, PA is one of the most prominent local businesses in the area. Its owner, Master Bong Pil Yang, recently got a Special Award from the South Korean president. The special commendation from his native country came after he received a similar honor from the district attorney’s office of Montgomery County.

Master Yang said that when you get recognitions, you should work harder, and at the same time stay dedicated and humble. He has lived in the greater Philadelphia area since 1978. He opened the school on South Main Street in the 1990s, from its previous location on Broad Street in Lansdale.

Aikido Classes

Charles Woodby is a late-bloomer when it comes to the martial arts known as aikido. He was already 50 years old when he went to his first class in the South Campus if the San Jacinto College in 1995. He first thought that aikido would be too physical for him but he left in love with the martial art right away. In 1999, he returned to be the head instructor for the program for community members and enrolled students.

Woodby said that aikido is a Japanese martial art that is for self-defense. It is not an aggressive martial art. There are no competitions and made in a way that no one gets hit when practicing the techniques. That’s why anyone is accepted, no matter the age or gender.

Sensei Bensen of the martial arts studio has trained with Shoto Tanemura, who traces his ninja teachers back to Uryu Hangan Gikanbo, a sensei from 1558 Japan.

Ninjitsu is an ancient Japanese martial art that trains individuals in physical fitness, mental awareness, weaponry, and stealth. Ninja warriors in the 1500s are like the special operations unit of that time. At present, the special ops of the armed forces use the same ideas.

International Martial Arts Contest

Cherokee Nation resident Wade Blevins got the gold medal in China during the recent World Traditional Wushu Championships. He competed in the bare handed division. He had to beat around 3,000 of the top martial artists in the event from across the globe.

In February, Blevins is a 41 year old martial artist who was one of the 30 to be part of the US team. Wushu is ancient Chinese martial arts made for physical conditioning and self-defense. He is the only Native American who took part at the international martial arts contest.

Martial Arts School

John Dobosz is the owner of Old School Martial Arts Academy in Woodland. His 11 year old daughter Abigail looks like any other 11 year old who is shy and demure. But when she is wearing her martial arts robe, she becomes a different person. She practices her kicks with her father, along with other children during practice sessions that her father John teaches.

John said that his martial arts classes teach children self-confidence by knowing all the moves. Abigail said that she and her classmates can now defend themselves. The school opened last June and provides classes for adults and children every Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights. The space is fully carpeted with big windows to let natural light in.

AKF Martial Arts Academy

Last June 23, four students from the AKF Martial Arts Academy of Neillsville tested in Kyukido. They have successfully passed the test and promoted to the next level by showing their knowledge of martial arts techniques and terminology.

The students were required to submit a written application that shows their mental knowledge and perform physical requirements that show the required skills to get to the next level. During the test, the students need to show techniques from previous tests as well as show the skills for the next belt. Repetition is one method of ensuring students remember the skills. Black belts took their pretest and will complete their promotion on November 8.
